Meet: Stephanie

Stephanie followed her love of frogs into a career as a herpetologist.

When did you first become interested in science?

I always had an interest in frogs from a very young age, and I knew that meant studying science to get into that career. I would say I was about 10 when I started really thinking about it.

What path did you take to your career?

I did all the sciences in high school and applied for biology courses at university which I got into, and completed my 3 year bachelor of biological science and was very lucky to get my perfect job from there.

What is an average day like in your job?

My average day varies a lot! I'm in charge of some staff so I have to make sure they are doing what needs to be done. And then I complete my daily tasks and get done as much extra work as I can. Sometimes I am planning with my boss and designing enclosures, sometimes I'm helping him build these things, other times I'm cleaning out enclosures and feeding. But everything I do I need my back ground in biology to be able to actually understand what I'm doing, and solve problems which I come across everyday.

What is the best thing that has happened in your job?

The best thing is when all the hard work we put in pays off and we get to reverse an extinction in the wild by re releasing frogs we have bred in captivity and looked after, sometimes for many years.

What advice would you give to a young aspiring scientist?

Don't be afraid of science, just do what you enjoy and you will find its not the "hard" scary thing most people talk about. I was lucky I knew what I wanted to do, however if you follow what you like you will eventually get to where you want to be too!
