Why study it?

Botanists learn about plants from the biggest tree, to the tiniest pollen grains. Botanists investigate how plants grow, evolve, reproduce and develop.


Botany is for anyone who has an interest in the plant life around them; native plants, introduced species, weeds, crops, and how they interact with one another and their environments.

Career options.

Botanists can work in the laboratory, or in the field. Career options include working as a forester, ecologist or conservationist. Botanists can research how plants can be used to make medication, plastics and other materials, and work in the field of genetic modification, or crop development.
