Meet: Teagan

Teagan is an environmental scientist who spends lots of time in the field.

When did you first become interested in science?

When I was a kid, probably around 8. I was the child that always asked 'why' and was just generally curious about the world.

What path did you take to your career?

I didn't actually study science in high school, however when it was time to head off to university I decided science was where I wanted to be, so I studied a bachelor of science at the University of Newcastle.

What is an average day like in your job?

My days vary, depending on if I am in the field or the office - out in the field, everyday is different - water, soil, air monitoring/sampling at a range of different locations. Office work involves organising contractors and equipment for fieldwork and some report writing.

What is the best thing that has happened in your job?

Finding out what I want to do for my career! My job has given me so many different experiences, that it has helped me understand what areas of science I most enjoy, I would like to persue in my career.

What advice would you give to a young aspiring scientist?

My best advice would be if/when you go to university, don't pigeon hole yourself too much with the degree/subjects you study. Just study what you enjoy, because you will learn so many more skills on the job.
